90 From Life: Day 13 – Dried Kiwi Jar
This is day 13 of my 90 day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
The subject for today’s painting is a small jar with dried kiwi slices. It seems that the corner of my eye and the back of my mind were conspiring for a while to get me to paint this. When I picked it off the shelf in the kitchen this morning, I realized I’d been thinking I should paint it for a while, without necessarily being aware that I was thinking that.
The process of making this piece went smoothly and doesn’t need comment. The one thing I struggled with was the irregular border. I’m fond of that type of border, and have used it for all of these challenge pieces. It seems to reinforce the impromptu and study-like character of these paintings. It’s also easy to get wrong, and surprisingly difficult to fix. I probably spent an hour on it and did not get it to my complete satisfaction.
The nature of these pieces is that I make the right, concentrated effort while painting, evaluate honestly when done, notice shortcomings for future improvement, and them most importantly… MOVE ON.
Here’s a video where I show the model I worked from, and discuss the outcome of the painting:
