“Unmasked”: 90 From Life – Day 67
This is day 67 of my 90 day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
So this exact orange has appeared in the previous 3 paintings as well as today’s. I didn’t plan it that way; it just worked out naturally. Today, though, I decided it would be the end of it’s guest-starring role, in dramatic fashion.
That blue I used in the background is actually an interesting color. It’s Manganese Blue, which at one time was prevalent in industry and widely available for artists’ colors. It has not been manufactured since the 1990’s, and is now very difficult to find genuine Manganese Blue paint. Straight out of the tube it’s a gorgeous, clear, icy-pure color. Some of the effect is lost in this painting as it of course was mixed to get a particular tone.
Very good replacement formulations exist – in some ways superior to the original – but I still have a tube of the real thing, and enjoy using it from time to time… sparingly, of course.
