Oil on linen, 8×6 inches, 2013 I love taking what is basically a symmetrical composition and tweaking it so that it loses it’s actual symmetry, but still retains the sense of it. Painting the reflection of the teacup onto the granite was also a real pleasure. Available at the Copley Society in Boston.

This is half of a matched set I recently completed. I’ve wanted to explore making trompe l’oeil paintings for a while, and simple objects stacked in an antique box seemed like a good start. I plan on doing more work like it.

Unfortunately the canvases I just prepared are no good. The surface was far too rough and absorbent. I’m ripping the canvas off the stretcher and redoing them. It’s not fun, and it’s a day of lost work, but I can’t use them as they are.
