90 From Life: Day 11 – Dragons
This is day 11 of my 90 day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
The subject for today’s painting is kind of a curious object. It’s a modern reproduction of an antique Chinese opium pipe. And before you can ask, no I haven’t, and I don’t even know if works for that purpose. I bought it on eBay as a prop for my paintings, and that’s all I’ve ever used it for. But what a prop.
I needed to do something difficult today, so I chose an object with a lot of intricacies – I wanted to do a good, involved value study.
I don’t time these paintings at all, but this one only took about 2 hours, roughly half of what they’ve normally been taking. That’s especially good considering the difficulty of the subject. I certainly felt confident and assertive while painting this, which is one of the main reasons to do a project like this.
