90 From Life: Day 19 – Sliced Green Apple
This is day 19 of my 90 day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
The subject for today’s painting is a green apple. I just couldn’t stand to paint another whole apple, so I took a slice out of which made it a more satisfying project all around.
This piece was a study in value and color temperatures. The apple has a warm green near the highlight, which shifts to a cooler green away from the highlight area.
The stem is an invention – it doesn’t exist on the model itself. In the original, the eye traveled between the highlight in the center left, to the slice on the right. The eye needed a better path, so I added the stem to give it a 3-point flow, which felt much more satisfying.
