90 From Life: Day 24 – Aged
This is day 24 of my 90 day project fto do one new painting from life each day.
The subject for today’s study was a very old plum that I’ve had in my studio for more than a week. It’s already been in 3 of these small paintings, and when I looked at it yesterday I realized that like many old things, there is a gentle beauty and glow about it.
But… the surface was also covered with folds, wrinkles, and creases, and that made for a lot of complexity. I think this would’ve been better as a 2-day subject rather than a several-hour one.
On a technical level, I was focused on keeping the values in each plane compressed so that the overall shape would be clear. The plum had shrunk to nearly a cube as it dried, so there was a clear top and side planes to the shape. Compressing the values means that within each plane, the different colors would be about the same degree of lightness or darkness.
