90 From Life: Day 3 – Eggcup and Eggshells
This is day 3 of my 90 day challenge of making one new painting from life each day.
Today’s subject is a 1950’s style egg cup (or bud vase), which I paired with a few eggshells. The shadow cast by the edge of the small shadowbox I have mounted on my easel made some dramatic angles, and it attracted me to the composition immediately.
I was also drawn to the contrast between the smooth texture of the eggshells and the sharply angled, cut-out surface of the cup. The variations in color on the cup was one of my main concerns while I worked.
If I had to do this again, I’d pay more attention to the values in the shadow areas. I spent a lot of time correcting them, and I think they’re acceptable, but the smarter strategy would be to plan these better from the start.
