90 From Life: Day 31 – “Shunned”
This is day 31 of my 90 day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
Today is where the project becomes something else. The first 30 days were focused on the mechanics and rhythm of working from life only on a daily basis, which hasn’t been a regular part of my studio practice for several years.
Now that I feel like I have my sea legs back in that regard, it’s time to move on to the real core of the project; working on compositional ideas, some aesthetic issues, and most of all, narrative, which for me is about to move from the background to front and center.
The title of this piece is “Shunned”, and I’ll leave the interpretation to your imagination.
For these studies I’m also starting to work in a looser, more painterly style. I find I enjoy trying to work with economy, and to make my points without belaboring them, or burdening the surface with too much detail.
