90 From Life: Day 4- Top and Shaker
Day 4 of my 90 day challenge, where I make one new painting from life every day.
The model for today’s painting comes from my small collection of handmade Mexican toys – this one is a spinning top.
I selected it mainly because I tend to work with more muted colors, and the vibrant color of this object seemed like a great change. The top itself has a strong horizontal element, so I added the vertical of the salt shaker to balance the composition.
This painting was definitely a challenge – it took most of my working day. That’s ok, because the point of this project is not to crank out a lot of work quickly, it’s to push myself to work hard and grow by deliberately trying difficult things.
If I had to do it again, I’d spend more time up front sketching the colored bands wrapping around the top. These were pretty tough going, and I would’ve been better off working out the geometry and perspective in the drawing phase, not the paint phase.
I also would have paid closer attention from the start to the contrast in the shadow areas on the top, as well as the saturation of the colors.
Here’s a video where I show the model I worked from, and discuss the outcome of the painting:
