90 From Life: Day 5 – Water Glass
This is day 5 of my 90-day challenge to do one new painting from life each day.
Since yesterday’s painting was complex, I wanted to do a less involved composition today. I chose a simple water glass resting on a piece of red cloth. In some ways, it turned out to be an even bigger challenge than yesterday’s work.
In fact, I think this painting somewhat missed the mark. That’s not false modesty, since I usually think my paintings are successful. It’s not that there are any major technical issues with it, the outcome just didn’t match what I had in mind when I began this morning.
I had a vision of how I wanted to express the simplicity of the water. I still have that vision in mind, and I can see that the painting doesn’t capture it. This is actually a good thing. It’s way better to have an idea and fail to express it than to have no idea at all and succeed in expressing that.
Disappointments like this are just in the nature of making art. I’m not sure there’s anything I’d do differently if I had the opportunity to start over. The good news is that I still have that idea of simplicity in my mind, and will just try to capture it again soon.
Here’s a video where I show the model I worked from, and discuss the outcome of the painting:
