“The visible world is no longer a reality and the unseen world is no longer a dream.” — W.B. Yeats
An Offering to Sky is an original still life painting, created with oil on linen mounted to panel.
This composition invites the viewer into a moment of elevation and presence. At its center stands a Tibetan bell—ornate, luminous, and still—flanked by ripe cherries and a weathered blue bottle. The background, rather than receding into shadow, opens into radiant sky. The effect is both grounded and expansive: familiar objects held in contemplation against an atmosphere of infinite space.
The contrast between the weight of the bell and the lightness of the sky creates a quiet tension—one that draws the eye and stills the breath. Every element has been chosen for its ability to reflect, absorb, or transmit light. Together, they offer a visual meditation on balance, reverence, and the unseen currents that shape the visible world.
Measuring 10 × 10 inches (25 × 25 cm), the painting is set in a wide black frame with a gently beveled edge. The outer dimensions of the frame are 15 × 15 inches (38 × 38 cm), and the piece arrives ready to hang.

"An Offering to Sky"
An Original Still Life Painting
The Inspiration
This painting began with a memory—of a Buddhist shrine perched high in the Himalayas, where prayer flags flutter against a cobalt sky and offerings rest on weathered stone.
An Offering to Sky draws on that quiet reverence. At the center of the composition is a ritual bell, ornate and luminous, its form radiating stillness. Around it: ripe cherries, a blue glass bottle, and a slab of pale, timeworn stone—objects chosen not for their symbolism, but for their presence. They are grounded. Earthbound. And yet they seem to reach upward, lifted by light.
The open sky in the background plays a central role here. It is not merely context—it is breath, expanse, silence. It gives space to the objects, and gives the viewer a place to pause. That sky is a companion to the bell: both vessels of clarity, resonance, and emptiness.
This is a painting about offering, but not of sacrifice. It is about attention. A moment held gently between earth and air. A gesture of presence, set quietly before the vastness.
The Finest Materials
An Offering to Sky was created using the highest quality materials and traditional techniques, ensuring both visual richness and lasting integrity.
The painting is executed on linen mounted to a rigid panel—a surface long favored by painters for its combination of strength, refinement, and stability. The linen is carefully prepared with multiple layers of archival ground, allowing for a luminous application of paint and preserving the delicate transitions of color and light.
Only the finest oil paints are used, with pigments chosen for their depth, permanence, and historical resonance. Many of the colors in this piece draw on traditions centuries old: the vibrant blue of the sky built in part from genuine Lapis Lazuli, prized since antiquity for its brilliance and rarity. The deep reds of the cherries and the radiant golds of the bell are layered slowly, allowing each glaze to breathe and settle before the next is applied.
This careful selection of materials and methodical approach to surface preparation ensures that An Offering to Sky will remain vibrant and structurally sound for generations to come—a work crafted not only to be seen, but to endure.
Painstaking Process
The creation of An Offering to Sky followed a process rooted in classical painting traditions—slow, deliberate, and deeply focused on clarity and atmosphere.
The composition began with preliminary pencil sketches, exploring balance, proportion, and the relationship between forms. A color study followed—executed loosely in oil—to test the harmony of tones, the interaction of objects with the sky, and the way light would move across the surface.
Once the composition was set, it was carefully transferred onto a linen-mounted panel using light charcoal. Over this drawing, an underpainting was executed in a limited grayscale palette—establishing the values, shapes, and tonal structure without the complexity of full color. This step laid the foundation for the atmosphere and sense of depth that would emerge in the final painting.
The color was applied over this base in slow, transparent glazes—sometimes over multiple sessions—each one contributing richness, subtlety, and luminosity. This layering approach allows light to move through the paint film and reflect back from the prepared ground, creating a glow that can’t be achieved in a single pass.
This process, unchanged in its essence for centuries, rewards patience. It invites the artist to listen closely to what the painting needs—to allow the surface to evolve slowly, until the image resolves not just as a depiction, but as a presence.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
