“Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.” — Paul Klee
“Ivory Towers” is an original still life painting, created with oil on linen mounted to panel.
This composition brings together a porcelain teacup, a pewter mug, a silver spoon, and a spiral compact fluorescent bulb—objects from different eras placed in quiet conversation. Each form is rendered with precision and care, unified by their interplay of curves, surfaces, and light.
At the center, the bulb rises like a sculptural presence—unexpected, slightly whimsical, and sharply modern. Around it, the more traditional forms reflect and absorb light with quiet grace. Together, they create a moment of stillness that invites reflection—on contrast, material, and the curious beauty of the everyday.
Measuring 9 × 12 inches (23 × 30 cm), the painting is set in a wide gold frame with a classic profile. The outer dimensions of the frame are 15 × 18 inches (38 × 46 cm), and the piece arrives ready to hang.

“Ivory Towers” is a meditation on contrast—between the refined and the industrial, the delicate and the utilitarian, the antique and the modern.
At the center of the composition stands a compact fluorescent lightbulb, sculptural and strange, rising like a modern column. Its base—dull metal and plastic—is surrounded by porcelain and silver: a teacup, a spoon, a pewter creamer. The objects form a quiet architecture of curves and edges, their arrangement both deliberate and improbable.
There’s humor here, but not satire. The painting does not mock its subject; rather, it holds a moment of surprising harmony, where the everyday becomes almost ceremonial. It invites the viewer to reconsider the ordinary—how even a discarded bulb can carry its own quiet grandeur when placed with care, seen with attention, and bathed in soft, directional light.
“Ivory Towers” doesn’t offer a clear narrative. Instead, it offers presence. Form, surface, and reflection become the language. And in that language, something unexpected emerges—a balance of tension and elegance, irony and sincerity, all held in a moment of stillness.
The Finest Materials
“Ivory Towers” was created with oil paint on fine linen mounted to a rigid panel—an enduring combination that has served painters for centuries. The linen provides a beautifully woven surface that holds detail with clarity, while the panel beneath gives it strength and permanence.
The painting was developed using a carefully selected palette of professional-grade oil paints, chosen for their richness, stability, and nuanced handling. These paints are formulated with high concentrations of pigment and traditional binders, ensuring that the color retains its vibrancy and depth over time.
From the cool metallic glint of the lightbulb base to the warm luster of antique porcelain, every surface was painted with attention to both texture and tone. The materials used are not merely functional—they’re an extension of the visual language, enabling the painter to convey subtle shifts in light, weight, and atmosphere with precision and sensitivity.
Crafted to last for generations, “Ivory Towers” is a work built not just on vision, but on the integrity of its materials.
Painstaking Process
The creation of “Ivory Towers” followed a disciplined, multi-stage approach rooted in traditional techniques—methods developed and refined by painters for more than 500 years.
The process began with the arrangement of the objects inside a shadow box, allowing for careful control over lighting, depth, and compositional rhythm. Once the lighting was perfected, a series of thumbnail sketches were made in pencil to explore structure and balance. A small color study followed—serving as both rehearsal and guide for the final piece.
The composition was then transferred onto a linen panel using a charcoal drawing. This initial sketch focused on establishing placement and proportion, setting the stage for the underpainting. The underpainting—a monochromatic version in shades of grey—was built slowly, mapping out form and light with clarity and precision. It served as the skeleton of the painting, grounding the composition before any color was introduced.
Over this dry foundation, layers of oil paint were added in translucent glazes and more opaque passages, depending on the surface being described. The gleam of porcelain, the diffuse softness of ceramic, and the matte finish of the unusual central object were each approached with a unique touch. Every shift in light and surface was rendered with intention.
This methodical layering process allowed the painting to achieve both optical depth and a quiet unity—bringing together disparate forms in a single, coherent atmosphere. Every step, from the first sketches to the final highlights, was executed with care, attention, and an eye toward enduring presence.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
