“Lemon and Marmalade Study” is from a long-running series of warm-up sketches.
These are done immediately prior to the real painting of the day – similar to stretches before exercising. The goal is to spend less than an hour on each one. Working quickly forces the artist to make fast and accurate judgements, and to immediately record them in paint.
Studies like these are part of the constant effort to improve that every artist focuses on.
“Lemon and Marmalade Study” is painted on a medium-weave Belgian linen. Produced from flax harvested in Western Flanders, it is manufactured by a company – Claessens – that has been operated by the same family for over a century. The linen is made according to a traditional process hundreds of years old, and requires several weeks from start to finish.
The linen fibers themselves are extremely long – up to 6 inches each. This adds tremendous strength and durability. It also imparts an subtly uneven and irregular appearance to the painting surface. Far from being undesirable, this is actually highly prized by artists and collectors alike. Rather than appearing as a completely uniform and even industrial product, fine linen has all the appearance of a handmade product directly from nature. Which, of course, it is.
The linen is cut to size, and then glued to a backing board. A thin wash of reddish-orange paint is applied to “tone” the surface – the brilliant white of untoned linen makes proper application of color more difficult. In addition, allowing the tone to show through – especially around the edges – allows for a warm and vibrant effect.
Only the finest paints from the best suppliers are used – including paint made with Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone found in only two locations on earth. Although modern chemistry has supplied artists with literally hundreds of pigments to choose from, experience has narrowed that range down to about a dozen – a powerful and flexible base to mix nearly all required colors. This beautifully balanced spectrum allows the artwork to glow with the authentic colors of the world around us.
Finally, the painting is presented with the matte shown in the image. This cream-colored matte showcases the painting under a shallow, arched opening – a dramatic presentation. Measuring 10 x 8 inches – a standard size – this painting can immediately and easily be placed in any standard 8×10 frame. Of course, your framer can also create a custom presentation for it.
