"Study in Silence with Pomegranate"
An Original Still Life Painting
The Inspiration
“Still Life with Pomegranate” is a meditation on time, tradition, and the quiet elegance of simple objects. Inspired by the depth and symbolism of classical still life painting, this composition invites the viewer to pause and observe the interplay of light, texture, and reflection. A ripe pomegranate, rich in color and history, stands at the heart of the scene, surrounded by the familiar elements of a well-stocked pantry—lemons, grapes, olive oil, and silver.
The arrangement is a careful balance of contrasts. The translucent glow of olive oil catches the light, its liquid surface shimmering beside the cool solidity of silver. The pomegranate’s textured skin is a striking counterpoint to the delicate sheen of grapes, each surface revealing something new as the light moves across it. This tension between smooth and rough, soft and reflective, creates a composition that is both grounded and dynamic, full of quiet movement beneath its stillness.
Light and shadow shape the forms with precision, lending the objects a sense of presence and weight. The glow of illumination draws attention to the finer details—the curve of a vessel, the glint of metal, the organic irregularity of fruit—while deeper shadows lend an air of mystery, hinting at what lies just beyond view. The effect is timeless, evoking the warmth of an old-world kitchen or a gathering of objects imbued with meaning.
The painting is suffused with a sense of quiet contemplation, echoing the traditions of still life while remaining firmly rooted in the present. It speaks to the beauty of the everyday, the richness found in simple things, and the way light has the power to transform what we see.
“Still Life with Pomegranate” is an invitation to linger—to appreciate the way objects relate to one another, to observe the subtle shifts in color and reflection, and to find poetry in the familiar. It is a study in refinement, a moment of quiet luxury, and a tribute to the enduring elegance of still life painting.
The Finest Materials
“Study in Silence with Pomegranate” has been meticulously crafted using the finest materials, employing traditional techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of artists for over five centuries.
This painting is executed on linen mounted to a prepared panel, a combination that offers both the refined texture of linen and the exceptional stability of a rigid support. The linen is carefully primed to create a stable, archival foundation—ensuring that the painting remains vibrant and enduring for years to come. This preparation process allows for precise detailing and enhances the rich interplay of light and shadow within the composition.
Only the finest oil paints have been selected, chosen for their richness, depth, and permanence. Many of the pigments used in this piece have been sourced from traditional locations around the world, known for their historical significance and lasting brilliance. The deep, luminous red of the pomegranate is enriched with Chinese vermilion, a pigment once favored by master painters for its striking intensity. The soft golden hues of the reflected light incorporate Bohemian green earth, renowned for its warm, organic depth. The intricate highlights on the silver vessel and glass are heightened with lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, lending a cool brilliance that enhances the painting’s sense of quiet radiance.
Every element, from the delicate reflections in the silver to the rich depth of the fruit, has been created with a commitment to lasting beauty. Designed to stand the test of time, “Study in Silence with Pomegranate” is a piece that will continue to captivate and inspire, offering a moment of contemplation and refinement for generations to come.
Painstaking Process
“Study in Silence with Pomegranate” was created using a traditional process very little changed for 500 years, known as the Flemish Technique. The arrangement of objects was carefully composed in a controlled lighting environment, allowing for a precise balance of light and shadow to enhance the reflective surfaces of silver, the rich translucency of fruit, and the interplay of textures within the composition.
Several small “thumbnail” sketches were made in pencil first, determining the overall design and placement of objects. A “color study” followed—this small version of the painting, completed without much detail, allowed for a deeper understanding of the primary colors and overall harmony of the composition. This study also served as a rehearsal, ensuring that the final painting would capture the intended contrast and depth.
Once the preparatory studies were complete, the composition was drawn onto the linen panel using light charcoal. The main shapes and placements were carefully mapped out, focusing on proportion and structure while leaving finer details to develop in later stages.
A simplified version of the painting in black and white was then applied on top of the charcoal sketch. This is known as an “underpainting,” a technique that establishes major forms and refines the gradations of light and dark—what artists refer to as “value.” By separating value from color, the painting developed a strong foundation, ensuring depth and luminosity in the final layers.
After several days, once the underpainting was sufficiently dry, the color layer was applied—this is what you see in the finished painting. The color was carefully built up in transparent layers, a process known as “glazing.” These thin washes create a jewel-like depth and glowing transparency of color, which enhances the deep crimson of the pomegranate, the golden warmth of the fruit, and the soft, reflective light playing across the silver.
Through this time-honored process, “Study in Silence with Pomegranate” achieves a quiet yet powerful presence, drawing the viewer into a moment of stillness where rich color and subtle light evoke contemplation and timeless beauty.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
