“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”
– Paulo Coelho
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” is an original still life painting, created with oil on panel. This piece beautifully captures a moment of quiet, cheerful contemplation, featuring a teacup adorned with delicate hand-painted flowers, accompanied by a silver spoon and a brilliant yellow napkin set against a maroon cloth.
Each element is rendered with care, from the fine details of the flower patterns on the teacup to the vibrant yellow of the napkin, inviting the viewer into a serene moment of reflection. The composition is a celebration of the simple joys and the quiet beauty of everyday objects.
Measuring 5 x 5 inches (approximately 13 x 13 cm), the painting is set in a flat black floating frame, which creates a slight separation between the frame and the painting. "Teacup and Yellow Napkin"
An Original Still Life Painting
The Inspiration
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” is a celebration of life’s quiet joys—a moment of warmth and contemplation captured in delicate detail. Inspired by the beauty found in simple, everyday objects, this painting invites the viewer to pause and appreciate the richness of the ordinary. A hand-painted teacup, its floral motifs gently rendered, sits beside a silver spoon and a luminous yellow napkin, all resting against a maroon cloth that deepens the sense of harmony and contrast.
The interplay of color and texture brings the composition to life. The soft folds of the napkin catch the light, its golden hue glowing warmly against the teacup’s cool porcelain. Shadows gently soften the edges, creating a sense of depth and intimacy, while the reflective surface of the spoon adds a subtle glimmer, balancing the stillness with a quiet energy.
This painting is an invitation to embrace the present—to savor small moments of beauty and reflection. Like the ritual of morning tea, or the gentle unfolding of a thoughtful pause in the day, it evokes a sense of peace and contentment. The delicate brushwork and nuanced play of light remind us that true richness is often found in the simplest things, waiting to be noticed.
Bathed in soft, natural light, the scene carries a quiet luminosity, much like sunlight filtering through a window or the gentle glow of an afternoon moment. It captures the essence of slowing down, of being fully present, and of seeing the extraordinary in the everyday.
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” is an homage to the small pleasures that bring warmth to our lives—a reminder that beauty is always within reach, waiting for those who take the time to truly see it.
The Finest Materials
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” has been meticulously crafted using the finest materials, employing traditional techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of artists for over five centuries.
This painting is executed on prepared panel, a surface chosen for its exceptional stability, smoothness, and ability to hold paint with remarkable clarity. The panel is carefully primed to create a stable, archival foundation—ensuring that the painting remains vibrant and enduring for years to come. This preparation process allows for precise detailing and enhances the delicate interplay of light and shadow within the composition.
Only the finest oil paints have been selected, chosen for their richness, depth, and permanence. Many of the pigments used in this piece have been sourced from traditional locations around the world, known for their historical significance and lasting brilliance. The porcelain glow of the teacup is enriched with lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, prized for its luminous, cool depth and Bohemian green earth, a pigment treasured by Renaissance masters for its subtle undertones. The maroon cloth beneath is deepened with Caput Mortuum, a rich earth red. The brilliant hue of the napkin is achieved with Nickel Yellow, an unusual but vibrant tone.
Every element, from the interplay of soft fabric folds to the delicate reflections along the silver spoon, has been created with a commitment to lasting beauty. Designed to stand the test of time, “Teacup and Yellow Napkin” is a piece that will continue to captivate and inspire, offering a quiet moment of contemplation and warmth for generations to come.
Painstaking Process
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” was created using a traditional process very little changed for 500 years, known as the Flemish Technique. The arrangement of objects was carefully composed in a controlled lighting environment, allowing for a precise balance of light and shadow to enhance the soft luminosity of porcelain, the gentle folds of fabric, and the reflective qualities of silver.
Several small “thumbnail” sketches were made in pencil first, determining the overall design and placement of objects. A “color study” followed—this small version of the painting, completed without much detail, allowed for a deeper understanding of the primary colors and overall harmony of the composition. This study also served as a rehearsal, ensuring that the final painting would capture the intended warmth and elegance of the scene.
Once the preparatory studies were complete, the composition was drawn onto the panel using light charcoal. The main shapes and placements were carefully mapped out, focusing on proportion and structure while leaving finer details to develop in later stages.
A simplified version of the painting in black and white was then applied on top of the charcoal sketch. This is known as an “underpainting,” a technique that establishes major forms and refines the gradations of light and dark—what artists refer to as “value.” By separating value from color, the painting developed a strong foundation, ensuring depth and luminosity in the final layers.
After several days, once the underpainting was sufficiently dry, the color layer was applied—this is what you see in the finished painting. The color was carefully built up in transparent layers, a process known as “glazing.” These thin washes create a jewel-like depth and glowing transparency of color, which enhances the crisp white of the teacup, the soft golden hues of the napkin, and the rich maroon backdrop.
Through this time-honored process, “Teacup and Yellow Napkin” achieves a quiet yet inviting presence, transforming everyday objects into a moment of stillness and warmth.

Ready for your collection today
“Teacup and Yellow Napkin” measures 5 × 5 inches (13 × 13 cm) and is painted with oil on prepared panel, following time-tested traditional methods.
It is set in a flat black floating frame, with outer dimensions of 8 × 8 inches (20 × 20 cm), and is ready to hang on your wall.
A floating frame enhances artwork by creating the illusion that the painting is suspended within the frame, with a small gap between the panel and the inner edges. This design allows the full surface of the painting to remain visible while adding depth and dimension.
One of the key advantages of a floating frame is its clean, contemporary aesthetic that complements both modern and traditional interiors. The subtle separation between the artwork and the frame emphasizes the composition without overpowering it, while natural shadows within the gap enhance the sense of depth.
Beyond aesthetics, floating frames provide structural protection by securing the painting’s edges and reducing wear over time. They also allow for slight air circulation, helping to preserve the artwork’s longevity. Offering both elegance and functionality, floating frames are an excellent choice for displaying artwork with a refined, polished look.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
