“Come, come, good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used; exclaim no more against it.”
– Shakespeare
“Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” is an original oil painting on linen, capturing a quiet interplay of light, form, and texture. A glass of deep red wine, a miniature pumpkin, and cracked walnuts rest on a timeworn wooden surface, set against a rich green cloth that adds depth and contrast to the scene.
The glass, with its delicate transparency, reflects and refracts the surrounding colors, while the smooth, curved form of the pumpkin contrasts with the rough texture of the walnuts. This careful balance of materials invites the viewer to pause and appreciate the understated beauty of simple, everyday objects.
Measuring 7 x 10 inches (18 x 25 cm), the painting is framed in gold leaf, enhancing its warm tones and refined presence. The framed dimensions are 13 x 16 inches (33 x 41 cm), offering a timeless and elegant presentation that complements the still life’s quiet sense of contemplation.

"Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin"
An Original Still Life Painting
The Inspiration
“Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” is a study in harmony—an intimate gathering of objects arranged in quiet conversation. Light moves across the scene, illuminating the deep crimson of a glass of wine, the warm tones of a miniature pumpkin, and the rugged textures of cracked walnuts. The setting is simple yet rich, evoking a sense of quiet reflection and appreciation for life’s small pleasures.
At the center, the wine glass catches and bends the surrounding light, its delicate transparency contrasting with the solidity of the objects around it. The smooth curve of the pumpkin offers a counterpoint to the rough, organic texture of the walnuts, their broken shells revealing a glimpse of what lies within. Each element is carefully placed, creating a balance of form and material, light and shadow, presence and absence.
The backdrop of deep green cloth adds a sense of depth and refinement, its folds catching the light in subtle ways that enhance the richness of the composition. Shadows settle softly, shaping the objects and inviting the viewer to linger, to notice the way reflections shift and textures reveal themselves over time.
This painting is a quiet meditation on contrast—the way glass, wood, and natural forms interact, the way light transforms and reveals, the way simple objects take on new meaning when seen with attention. It speaks to the tradition of still life as a reflection on beauty, impermanence, and the art of seeing.
“Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” is an invitation to pause—to savor the depth of color, the interplay of materials, and the understated elegance of ordinary things. It is a moment suspended in time, a quiet indulgence, a celebration of stillness and light.
The Finest Materials
“Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” has been meticulously crafted using the finest materials, employing traditional techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of artists for over five centuries.
This painting is executed on linen mounted to panel, a surface chosen for its balance of texture and stability. The linen’s fine weave allows for delicate transitions of light and color, while the rigid panel provides a durable, archival foundation. This careful preparation enhances the depth and luminosity of the painting, ensuring its lasting vibrancy.
Only the finest oil paints have been selected, chosen for their richness, depth, and permanence. Many of the pigments used in this piece have been sourced from traditional locations around the world, known for their historical significance and enduring brilliance. The luminous golden hues of the pumpkin are enriched by Bohemian green earth, a pigment historically prized for its subtle depth and cool undertones. The deep red of the wine is enhanced with Chinese vermillion, a pigment valued for its intensity and warmth. The dramatic shadows and highlights that bring the composition to life incorporate lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, a gemstone pigment treasured by master painters for its luminous blue qualities. Each color is chosen not only for its visual impact but also for its stability over time.
Every element of this painting, from the crisp reflections in the wine glass to the intricate textures of the walnuts, has been created with a commitment to lasting beauty. Designed to stand the test of time, “Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” is a piece that will continue to captivate and inspire, offering a moment of quiet reflection through its interplay of light, color, and form.
Painstaking Process
“Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” was created using a traditional process very little changed for 500 years, known as the Flemish Technique. The arrangement of objects was carefully composed in a controlled lighting environment, allowing for a precise balance of light and shadow to enhance the richness of the fruit, the transparency of the wine, and the interplay of textures across the composition.
Several small “thumbnail” sketches were made in pencil first, determining the overall design and placement of objects. A “color study” followed—this small version of the painting, completed without much detail, allowed for a deeper understanding of the primary colors and overall harmony of the composition. This study also served as a rehearsal, ensuring that the final painting would capture the intended warmth and depth.
Once the preparatory studies were complete, the composition was drawn onto the linen panel using light charcoal. The main shapes and placements were carefully mapped out, focusing on proportion and structure while leaving finer details to develop in later stages.
A simplified version of the painting in black and white was then applied on top of the charcoal sketch. This is known as an “underpainting,” a technique that establishes major forms and refines the gradations of light and dark—what artists refer to as “value.” By separating value from color, the painting developed a strong foundation, ensuring depth and luminosity in the final layers.
After several days, once the underpainting was sufficiently dry, the color layer was applied—this is what you see in the finished painting. The color was carefully built up in transparent layers, a process known as “glazing.” These thin washes create a jewel-like depth and glowing transparency of color, which enhances the deep red of the wine, the golden warmth of the pumpkin, and the earthy tones of the walnuts.
Through this time-honored process, “Walnuts, Wine, and Pumpkin” achieves a quiet yet rich presence, transforming a simple arrangement into a study of light, texture, and timeless elegance.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
